2/6 Appassionata Piano Sonata and Clarinet Trio Masterclasses

Even though I don't personally play piano or clarinet, watching a masterclass on performing Beethoven's music can add quite a bit to the enjoyment of a performance...

Part 1-3: Pianist Lisa Yui, a Yamaha Performing Artist and faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music, gives a masterclass on Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23, Op. 57, "Appassionata", for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra 2011.

Part 4-7: Jonathan Biss teaches a masterclass on Beethoven's Clarinet Trio Op 11 at the Conservatory of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. He was the guest of the Aldwell Center for Piano Performance and Musicianship, which is part of the Conservatory.

8/29 Barenboim on Beethoven

Recently Daniel Barenboim performed all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in Berlin and they were all recorded for DVD. In addition to that, he recorded several "masterclasses" in Chicago where he would coach some famous young pianists of today, such as Lang Lang and Jonathan Biss. Here's a good chunk of his masterclass.  He coaches Alessio Bax on the Hammerklavier in vids 11-17.  Personally, Barenboim is not one of my favorite Beethoven interpreters, but what he has to say in these classes is still pretty illuminating...(though when Lang Lang performs here I find it best to close my eyes, not sure why).
